HIGHLIGHTS
ALLEA held its 19th General Assembly at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) in Sofia on 16-18 May 2018. The scientific programme comprised the ALLEA scientific symposium “Science in Times of Challenged Trust and Expertise”, as well as the science-policy symposium co-organised by the European academies’ project SAPEA titled “Shaping European Science Advice: Insights and Experiences”. The event included the 2018 All European Academies Madame de Staël Prize for Cultural Values and the annual business meeting of ALLEA Member Academies.
Is there a loss of trust(worthiness) in science and expertise? Are “fake news” and/or the digital transformation of social interactions and information really moving us towards a post-fact era? What can science do about it? Keynote speakers will address these and other questions at the symposium “Science in Times of Challenged Trust and Expertise”. Read more
For the fifth time, a distinguished laureate was honoured with the ALLEA Madame de Staël Prize for outstanding scholarly contributions to European culture, identity and values. The prize promotes the intellectual and cultural richness of Europe. This year it was handed over by the European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society Mariya Gabriel. Read more
How has science advice been re-imagined at the European level? The experiences and insights of SAPEA and the European Commission’s Scientific Advice Mechanism were discussed with practical examples and lessons learned from the most recent experiences. Read more

The 2018 ALLEA General Assembly was co-organised and hosted by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
International partners included the European academies consortium SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) and the Italian foundation Compagnia di San Paolo.
