Maarja Kruusmaa is an Estonian robotics professor and a Chief Scientific Advisor for European Commission. Her field of research is robotics and underwater technologies for environmental monitoring and other applications. She is a board member of the Estonian Academy of Science and has held several positions and commissions of trust in science administration and science policy, including the position of a vice-rector for research in TalTech (Tallinn University of Technology) and a president-elect of NORDTEK (Network of Nordic Universities of Technologies), a member of Estonian Research and Development council and a member of Future Emerging Technologies Advisory Board with the European Commission. As the Chief Scientific Advisor, she was recently responsible for the recommendations for the European Commission on Strategic Crisis Management.
Research in crises gives a perspective of how to generalise and learn from the past while the society walks from crisis to crisis.
